Levi Newell Kendall was born in Lockport, Niagra County, New York on 19 April 1822, the same day his father died. As I was trying to find evidence of this birthdate and try to discover how his father died, I came across this interesting web-site about the history of Lockport.
Lockport was established when construction began on the Erie Canal in that area in early 1821. Construction workers flocked to the area, and then people of various occupations to make a community followed . . . a town springing up in the wilderness.
So what was Levi's family doing there? Was his father killed in a construction accident while working on the canal?
