Levi Newell Kendall's Birthplace

Levi Newell Kendall was born in Lockport, Niagra County, New York on 19 April 1822, the same day his father died. As I was trying to find evidence of this birthdate and try to discover how his father died, I came across this interesting web-site about the history of Lockport.

Lockport was established when construction began on the Erie Canal in that area in early 1821. Construction workers flocked to the area, and then people of various occupations to make a community followed . . . a town springing up in the wilderness.

So what was Levi's family doing there? Was his father killed in a construction accident while working on the canal?

Levi Newell Kendall & Eliza Clements Kendall Gravestones

Levi Newell Kendall and Eliza Clements Kendall are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Springville, Utah County, Utah. They share a plot in Section A, plot #266. I am assuming that these stones are not original . . . they look rather new and are set in cement. Does anyone have photographs of the originals?

Utah Cemetery Burials Database has scanty information on Levi and Eliza. Photographs were taken by me on July 8, 2007.

Levi Newell Kendall's Cabin

Levi Newell Kendall was in the original pioneer company that entered the Salt Lake Valley July 22, 1847. He moved to Springville, Utah in 1856 and later built this little cabin in Mapleton, Utah. Mapleton City inherited the cabin and moved it to their city park located on Main Street and Center Street in Mapleton, Utah.

I took these photographs on July 2, 2007. Information about Levi has been gleaned from lots of different reading . . . more later.

Mormon Immigration Index

Mormon Immigration Index is an index of the passenger lists of immigrant ships that carried LDS converts during the mid- to late-1800s. It includes biographical information, information about the ship and voyage, and excerpts from journals of voyagers. It is on a CD-ROM that can be purchased from the LDS Distribution Center. I will be taking information from it to include here and wanted to let you know what it is.

Where was James Fife, Sr. Buried?

FamilySearch says that James Fife (the father, born 27 Feb 1804) was buried in Cedar City, Iron County, Utah when he died on 4 Sept, 1863. The Utah Cemetery Burials Database has no record of this burial. However, they do have a James Fife buried in Fountain Green, Utah with the dates 2/2/1811-9/4/1863. Same death date, but different birthday. Is this our James and if so, which birth date is correct?

If anyone can verify any of this information, please e-mail me (Sonia) at mypioneers@gmail.com.

Margaret Mathieson Fife Gravestone

Margaret Mathieson Fife is buried in the Providence City Cemetery in Providence, Cache County, Utah. She is in plot #A3318. She is in the same area as her son James and his family. Margaret's burial information is found on Utah Cemetery Burials Database. Photographs were taken by me on March 29, 2008.
